The main concept of this game Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag is the struggle of Edward Kenway, as he blasts his way through the Caribbean wondering if he could ever make it home.
This version is no different when it comes to the main idea; in fact it is combining the best of all the previous versions.
Edward Kenway finds it difficult to leave his pirate life behind although he would like to return to England as a respectable man, and we also find it very difficult to see Assassin’s Creed in a landlocked landscape after enjoying the freedom of the ocean for so long.
Why do we especially love the world of Black Flag?
Remarkable isn’t even the right word to describe the world of Black Flag.
We feel it is the best setting in the history of the franchise. It has all what you can relate to in the West Indies, the Mayan ruins, the mysterious deadly jungles and the impressive colonies.
There has been a great attention paid to the little details especially in the building of some cities like Havana.
You can see the stones of the cathedrals and the famous taverns. Some islands are inhabited by nothing than sea turtles and curious crabs with ship wrecks waiting to be explored.
We think that the variety was interesting and enriching.
We love how Black Flag is all about seizing opportunity and appreciating freedom.
There is something captivating about the sounds of the crew as a humpback whale is leaping into the air.
How is Assassin’s Creed 4 different from the previous version?
In Assassin’s Creed III, Kenway only jumped to sea in a series of isolated side missions.
But in this game, the sea is where all the magic happens. At the beginning of Black Flag, Kenway takes a deserted pirate ship.
It is your duty to rebuild this into a vessel that is capable of enduring the hardships of war in the Caribbean.
The game gives you a lot of ways to capture coins needed to upgrade your vessel.
You can find a treasure using an old map or you can raid a military storehouse to get the wood and metal you need.
You will find deserted sailors to add to your crew and rum to exchange for money.
We think that the game is very generous in resources and gives you all the reasons to run off and explore.
The importance of naval combat:
Both the main storyline and the side missions involve a lot of serious sea battles so upgrading your ship is really crucial.
It is all about strategic positioning and utilizing the available weapons whether you are placing explosives into the path of an unsuspecting enemy or using a mortar to attack them from a distance.
Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag has so much more to it:
Using your spyglass you can also spot cargos to inspect if they have something that you need.
You can see exactly how much money you can loot and the level of your enemy.
This will help you to decide whether it is best to attack right away or if you should wait until you have upgraded your ship to match your enemy’s ability.
Success in these sea missions is not just about accurately firing your cannons but it is about how you strategically manage your risk, wins and losses.
Assassin’s Creed 4 Black brings back old memories:
Destroying a ship gives you half of its cargo. You need to get on board to do some traditional sword fighting if you want to have it all.
Fighting the crew will enable you to reap the whole reward and is a bit nostalgic bringing back old memories from sword fighting battles we loved in the older versions.
You have to jump from one ship to another and skilfully swing your sword as your crew cheers when your enemy surrenders.
This is also what you have to do once you have set your mind on destroying a seaside fortress.
First you have to fire those defences before raiding the fortress and engaging in some dirty one to one sword combats in a storm of smoke and fire.
The game gives you endless options:
You have great control on how the storyline progresses.
After raiding a gunboat, you can either scrap it for parts or you can send it on to trade on your behalf and earn money.
Overtake a fort and you will unlock a dozen of new activities.
You can find the location of white sharks to use their skin for armor or a hidden underwater shipwreck that you can raid for more rewards.
Whatever you do, you will feel that you are progressing in a way. And this game advances really fast, too.
Assassin’s Creed 4 Black Flag looks especially impressive on Play Station 4, with improved lighting and greater resolution to capture the beauty of the world of Black Flag.
You can pay attention to the little details that the developers did their best to make it as captivating as possible.
